Knitted reflective Mylar
In this large-scale piece made of knitted, highly unconventional material of Mylar, Shaw touches on a range of emotions and experiences such as love, affect, grief, trauma, as well as the unintended effects of transmission. As each row gradually loosens, we are reminded of how successive generations find ways to distance themselves from their traumatic history, while remaining inextricably linked by their intense emotions. Although not everyone has experienced trauma directly, it’s impossible to turn away from it. The work’s title alludes to the genealogical chain that includes Shaw’s children, her mother, her grandmother, and so on…
